Part 3 of Text Talk Lesson

You will NOT be doing the Text Talk lesson in class, but we encourage you to do it during your internship.

Part 3: Find text talk book for your next text talk lesson. You will be planning a text talk lesson that you will do in class–choose a picture book for this lesson and bring title or book to class. See the list of books at the back of the text talk lesson in the packet–you may select from these titles or another if you get my approval. Also see the examples of the lessons on the class Web site–do NOT select books that already have lessons on the Web site. You may select a book with a diversity theme and use this book for your assignment in CI 3000.

1.    What are the three dimensions of fluency? How can you assess each dimension?

2.    Rasinski refers to fluency as a “bridge” between decoding and comprehension. What does he mean by the “bridge” metaphor?

3.    What instructional methods does Rasinski suggest for students with difficulties in automatic and prosodic reading?

4.    Multidimensional Fluency Scale (MFS) is used to measure prosodic quality of oral reading. List components of the MFS and describe what each refers to (p. 49).

Text Talk Lesson: Part 2 (see instructions)

You will plan a Text Talk lesson for the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Marshall (1998). Pattern your lesson after the model and the criteria contained in the Text Talk article and the sample lesson plan in your packet. Make sure you have a summary/extension question at the end. Post this lesson on your blog. Your instructor will grade your lesson, and give you feedback. You may redo the lesson and turn it in again if you are not satisfied with your grade.

Your lesson should contain:

  • Title, author(s), illustrator(s), date, ISBN #
  • A short summary of the story
  • Page #s where you will stop with questions that you will ask or statements that you will make
    • Remember to focus on the text
    • ask thoughtful questions
    • include appropriate vocabulary questions
    • not too many questions
    • not all stops need to have questions–statements are allowed
  • A summary/extension question at the end

You need to bring title of book to class the next class meeting.
